Wild williwaw aftermath

Posted by on October 26, 2005 8:01 AM |

NO I haven't been drinking _ a real "williwaw" hit the Merseyside coast last night.

Gale force westerly winds and driving rain were whipping around the house, blowing up from what was just a normal blustery autumn afternoon.
Aleutian islanders used to call this phenomenon a 'williwaw", and I'm not going to argue with them _ it's just a shame that the tide heights and times are so unhelpful for a late season seawatch.
All is not lost though _ if you've got any time to spare this morning, I'd check out the nearest marine lake to you for any birds blown in off the Irish Sea in the hooley (and spare a thought for me stuck in the office AGAIN).
New Brighton, West Kirby, Crosby, Southport _ and don't forget the Sands Lake at Ainsdale, they could all be worth a look this morning, you never know what could be recovering from the williwaw on the water this morning.....
Arctic Terns and Little Gulls were about in small numbers offshore in the North West yesterday, but there's always a chance of an early Little Auk, or tired seaduck.
Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies.....
