Still not managed to get down to Anglesey for the Green Heron, but at least I'm back in the field in the north west.
Birding buddies Neill, Tropical and Jellyhead took the coastal drive down to Anglesey yesterday, and had the yankee heron feeding at ranges down to 15 yards _ very nice, I hope it'll stay for the winter.
The boys also caught up with the Black Scoter off Llanfairfechan and had Little Egret to boot _ the latter is almost guaranteed in north Wales these days.
I kept to the local patch, although it was still in the grip of the big November freeze up...
Marshside had plenty of finches, Merlin, Stonechat, Pink Feet etc and numbers of the wintering Pochard on the sandplant lagoon are building up nicely.
Thanks to everyone who e-mailed me news while I've been away _ everything from Sprawks to Cranes have popped up in my mail.
The cold snap brought a few Bewick's Swans in to Martin Mere, where there are about 1200 Whoopers _ but I was too busy socialising at the bird fair this weekend to have a good look at them.
No sign of the Slav grebe on Southport's marine lake yesterday by the way _ but the lake is always worth a check in winter, as is Crosby Marine Park, which hosted Great Northern Diver while I was away I beleive.
A Smew was reported there on Saturday.
Bring on the waxwings....
