The recent rains have flooded the reserve again nicely, and as a result the numbers of wildfowl are increasing.
Pintail, shoveler, wigeon, gadwell, teal and mallard crowded the water on Marshside One - old friends back for the winter.
27 whooper swans in several small family parties flew inland from the tideline, making a bee-line (or should that be swan-line?) for Martin Mere.
Several hundred pink feet fed out on the saltmarsh, where merlin and kestrel were hunting.
A short eared owl was about earlier on, but I couldn't linger - another week over in Yorkshire on a course loomed, so I headed home via Plex Moss, where a buzzard was flapping by.
The green heron was still on Anglesey, black scoter at Llanfairfechan and, nearer to home, slav grebe on Southport Marine Lake, greater northern diver at Crosby Marine Park and a red necked grebe at Pennington Flash.
I wonder if any of them will hang around long enough for me to catch up with them next weekend?
