Training over and back in Merseyside...now all I've gotta get through is Christmas before I can get some proper birding done.
In Yorkshire agin last week, hence little news on the blog, but at least Howden had oodles of goldcrest, titmice and thrushes feeding around its narrow lanes and leafy (nope, they still haven't fallen there yet) gardens.
Chaffinch flocks held a few bramblings, but best of all was a merlin, tazzing about the rooftops after goldfinches one morning _ great to see one in such an unexpected place!
The rooks there have already begun renovating nests for next year, as befits such early breeders, and closer to home barn owls are putting on a reasonable show at Martin Mere from the Miller's Bridge Hide.
Plenty of buzzards there too, and the feeding stations are drawing loads of tree sparrows _ even by the back door to the centre they cling to feeders only a few feet from the human traffic _ superb birds.
The ring billed gull appears to have moved up the coast from Crosby to Ainsdale, visiting the Sands Lake and loafing on the beach, but it's a trickier proposition here than at Crosby.
With waxwings in Stockport yesterday, it has got to be worth checking any cotoneaster bushes for the ultimate Christmas bird!
Eyes to the skies everyone, eys to the skies.
