Latest Chiffchaff News....

Thanks to Paul "Tropical" (don't ask) Thomason for this on the wintering Chiffchaffs in Birkdale dunes, Tropical's local patch for many moons...

Hi John, one for your blog.
Was out today (Sun.4/12) with dogs doing the usual route through Birkdale L.N.R. when I found a common chiffchaff, while watching it, it was joined by another dull grey chiffy, while I could hear a 3rd behind me.
Fairly certain that the dull one was a Tristis I rung Jellyhead Jackson who needs this race for insurance purposes.
By time he got to me none of the chiffys could be found, although I had 7 redpolls while waiting for him.
After 1/2 hour of searching with him we gave up and headed back.
1/2 mile on at some likely looking bushes we pished in hope and up popped a male blackcap, while looking at this Jellyhead got on to a common chiffy, within 5 mins we had seen 3 chiffys, every one a different shade from dark brown to light brown and cold grey.
The only call we heard was the occasional contact call of common chiffy.
Could have been the same 3 I had seen an hour earlier.
None of these birds had been rung, as local ringers have rung 3 chiffys in this area recently including 1 Tristis.
Take care,
Tropical.
