Initially it seemed pretty quiet at Martin Mere last week when I visited with Barry McCarthy.
Not many pinkies on the marsh, but easily over 1,000 Whooper Swans about, and from Miller's Bridge Hide there were five Bewick's Swans.
The regular Buzzards that haunt the reserve were loafing about on fenceposts at the back of the mere, at least until a dark phase bird took off, spooking a flock of 40+ Fieldfares and 15 Stock Doves from nearby fields.
Over 50 Ruffs were feeding amongst Lapwings on the main mere, and the feeding stations near the In-Focus, Janet Kear and Miller's Bridge hides were all attracting good numbers of passerines.
Titmice and many Chaffinches and Greenfinches were coming in, as well as loads of Tree Sparrows - always pleasing to watch.
A Peregrine was perched up out from the old, and infinitely scope-unfriendly North West Water hide, but numbers of wildfowl seemed generally down - perhaps milder weather means they aren't tied to the constant food supplies of the reserve......?
Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies ....
