I've resisted the temptation to year-list for the last ten years at least now, doing my best to be good and only going for occasional twitches.
But as my New Year resolution is to succumb to temptation, I found myself tazzing round Lancs yesterday trying to rack up a good start to the year.
Highlights included a Bittern out on the ice at Leighton Moss, Red Crested Pochard and Long Tailed Duck at the nearby Pine Lake, and closer to home, Little Owl, Short Eared Owl and Barn Owl all around Martin Mere, where a female Brambling was coming to feeders at The Janet Kear hide.
Could that possibly have been the Golden Oriole I heard calling at Woodwell?????
I dipped on Waxwings in Preston, and Bewick's Swan at the Mere, but the year is still young, and while I'm not past 100 species yet, I'm a whole lot closer than I was 24 hours ago!
Adding to the fun, was my first experiment with a digital camera and telescope - for the results see below.
Can you identify the species, 'cos I don't think I could unless I was there??
(I don't think Steve Young has much to worry about!)

A ringtail Hen Harrier was on the tide at Marshside, a scarce bird there now, unlike Parkgate where there are up to four of the critters.
Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies...
