After a chilly day down in North Wales yesterday I got back to hear loads of news from those with the sense to stay local over the weekend....
Before I get to that, I suppose I should have known the Buff-Bellied Pipit would show up in Lincs again, so it looks like a trip to the badlands south of the Humber is on the cards.....
Anyway, back at home, Gary McLardy scored with a red kite over Range Lane, Cabin Hill, Formby on January 23.
The bird was heading south....could it be wintering in the area??????
Derek Williams had the following:
19/1/06 - 26/1/06:
Downholland Moss:
7 Cormorant; Stonechat; 60+ Chaffinch; 8 Tufted Duck; 37 Fieldfare; 5 Song Thrush; Buzzard; Peregrine; 77 Mallard.
Best of all _ Derek reports Caspian AND Yellow Legged Gulls from the area around the Kwik Save Warehouse in St Helens.
Tony Duckels was out and about near Formby too in January, with Common Snipe and 2 Jack Snipe in the Hightown Dunes, 2 Ravens over Formby and over the weekend of January 21/22, Crossbill and 10 Redpoll around the alder grove on the Old Fisherman's Path, Freshfield.
Jim Brady had a Dipper on Saturday (January 28) at Worthington Lakes, at the Worthington Water Treatment Works on the River Douglas to be precise _ that makes the bird the nearest to our area by my reckoning (easily closer than Scorton Weir).
Jim also had 9 Bewick's Swans feeding in the hard rush off the Ron Barker hide at Martin Mere yesterday, and two hunting Barn Owls.
And North Wales?
Great Northern Divers, Hawfinch, Water Pipit, Chough _ but more of that later.....although before I forget, if you're going Hawfinch huntin' in the Conway Valley, call in at the RSPB reserve at Conway first _ they've got up to date gen AND maps!
Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies.
