One of those February days....

Posted by on February 27, 2006 8:52 AM |

Soaked by an early shower at Marshside I headed over to Martin Mere to dry out yesterday.

It was one of those grey days when nothing seems to be moving _ the three Avocets were at the Mere having spurned the delights of Marshside last Sunday _ fickle swine!
And the reserve's Tree Sparrows were in good voice, chirping away all over the place, and showing very well around the various feeding stations.
They're at their most obliging at the feeders by the back door of the visitor centre.
70 pairs nested at Martin Mere last year _ good news.
Whoopers were still on the main mere (no bloody Bewick's AGAIN), but there weren't many geese about _ larger numbers of pinkies were hiding on the saltmarsh at Marshside earlier on.
The male juv Marsh Harrier was hunting from the Miller's Bridge Hide and the usual Buzzards were loafing about on fenceposts.
Loads of chaffinches "pinked" away in the branches along the paths, but I couldn't find the Willow Tit, still apparently popping up on a regular basis in a roving tit flock.
A Chiffie has been seen in the collection part of the reserve, where a flock of Siskin and a few Redpolls have also been recorded in the last week.
A male Hen Harrier and Short Eared Owl were hunting Marshside at dawn _ hopefully they'll stick around.
A Barn Owl was hunting along the Formby by-pass just north of the Weld Blundell pub at 5.30am this morning and a Mistle Thrush was in full, wild song as I walked up Old Hall Street to log on for the day....
Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies....
