Tropical at Taggs

Posted by on March 11, 2006 10:47 AM |

Better late than never...."Tropical" Thomason had ELEVEN Jack Snipe at Taggs Island on Wednesday.

A mega-count for Taggs _ probably birds heading back north for the breeding season have swelled the numbers here, as we've been seeing only a handful for most of the winter.
He also had two Chiffchaffs in the scrub that is establishing itself very nicely halfway down the site (on the beach between Ainsdale and Birkdale _ park at Weld Rd or Pontins entrances to the shore and walk south/north depending).
The Chiffies could well have been migrants, although looking at the weather forecast for tonight I think my Wheatear ambitions are about to be snowed off.
Pete Allen counted 24 Shoveler at the Sands Lake, Ainsdale on Sunday last _ there were a fair few there this morning, amongst the Tufties, but I didn't have time to count them.
John Bannon had a pair of Peregrines perched up on the pylons on Churchtown Moss this week, plus the usually mossland stuff.
Well that's it, gotta be dragged round the shops kicking and screaming now....
Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies.....

Hi,
I am new to this bird stuff but could have sworn I saw a chough in a tree in Queens Drive Mossley Hill on wed 8th march.Checks in various guide books and RSPB website seemed to confirm this but all say not local to area, is this possible or could it have been something else although the orange bill was a clue.
Cheers
Paul

Nothing is impossible Paul _ although the nearest Choughs to Liverpool are on the Great Orme, above Llandudno.
However one hung around Otterspool Tip in the 1970s for a long time, and more recently a bird was present, but elusive on the Fylde last year....
If it was a Chough, it's a heck of a way to start birding!!!!
