My field sketch of White Backed Woodpecker in Livberze Forest in Latvia...such an enigmatic bird I was too busy gawping at it to take a pic!!!
This is the area where we watched a pair of these birds at the nest in a magnificent primeval forest of black and white alder, birch, aspen and conifers, experiencing the large swooping form of White Backs above you is pure magic.
Best new bird I have seen in years.

Next comes Grey Headed Woodpecker - quite common going by the mournful piping we heard in a number of places. These were in Kemeri National Park, also home to Black, Three Toed, Great Spotted....and a family of Wolves, the only sign of which we saw was a nice pile of poo on a track....Jellyhead thought it made a good moustache.

Now Three Toed Woodpecker, its drumming sounded like a machine gun - lovely pecker, also in Kemeri...

Last but not least, Middle Spotted Woodpecker, which I've seen before in Lesbos, but had forgotten the racket they make - big noise little bird...this one was in Odini Forest, where we also had Lesser Pecker, and heard White Backed in the vastness of the birches.

Wow.
