Almost a raging hooley....

Posted by on May 24, 2006 5:55 AM |

Shocking weather this a.m....down side is it'll wash out waders nests along the coast, upside is it'll be good for seawatching today.

Tide is high in Liverpool at about 9.30am, so if you're free get your best pirate gear on, wrap everything in binbags (especially your 'scope) and get down to New Brighton, Crosby front or Formby Point.
While skuas generally cut right across Liverpool Bay in Spring, from Anglesey to Bowness on Solway (and if you ever go there looking to watch from the viaduct, remember, there is NO viaduct, just a pile of stones) today's conditions may bring them in, and there's always the chance of the odd stormie, Manx Shearwater and all the usual Gannet and Fulmar traffic.
If nothing else you'll get plenty of fresh air.
Tides are even better at the weekend, so I say LET IT BLOW!
Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies....

If birders can,t make to Formby point this weekend, the Black Browed Albatroos has returned to Sula Sgeir in the Western Isles and is nest building! If you want to see it a boat trip has been organised, ONLY 1509.00 per person! Second thoughts I might give Formby Point a go and find my own.
Going to join "Bazzo, King of the dunes" tomorrow early doors, he had a good session today, Sabs Gull being the highlight.

Having seawatched from the Butt of Lewis (no tittering at the back there please) two years back, I think you'd have to pay ME more than a grand and a half to get on a small boat and set sail off north Lewis.
The mountainous seas (on a calm day) are thronged with seabirds, but I doubt you'd have to worry about the crew supplying the chum - you'd produce it yourself. Copiously.
God knows what it'd be like if it was rough....

Moderate to stiff northwesterlies forecast Saturday-Tuesday, with good tides throughout. Force 4-6 onshore often more productive(at Formby Point, anyway) than a full-on gale...at least you can hold the goddam scope steady, the place isn't like the sandstorm sequence in 'Lawrence of Arabia',and birds are often tired enough after a few days of wind to let themselves be pushed well inshore...Storm Petrels especially, tho it may be a tad early for them (it was a tad early for Sabs Gull as well, though)
