Seawatch 9.9.06

Posted by on September 9, 2006 8:44 PM |

tide9.9.jpg

Ten metre tides and the worst wind possible - a warm southerly onshore - so the sea was flatter than Lincolnshire off Formby Point today, still I thought there were worse things to do than sit in the sun scanning the bay, so I nipped down to the Tobacco Dump for a quick seawatch between 12.15pm and 1.50pm.
There were very good numbers of Sandwich Terns offshore, but not much else, a Harbour Porpoise and Grey Seal were nice, as was a Clouded Yellow by the path as I walked down to the frontal dunes.
Pleasant hour or two really....
Fulmar 1 south
Common Tern 9
Arctic Tern 1 south
Sandwich Tern 85
Razorbill 1 north
Guillemot 2 south
Great Crested Grebe 1 juv offshore
Red Throated Diver 2 full summer birds offshore - great views
Wigeon 3 north
Cormorant 20+
Common Scoter 60+
Kittiwake 6 south

plus GBB, LBB, Herring Gull, BHGs, Grey Plover, Barwits, Dunlin, Oystercatcher etc.
Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies...

Hi John

I've just recently found your blog. I used to bird in your neck of the woods and enjoy with some nostalgia learning of all the good stuff now being seen in my old haunts.

Anyways it was great to read you'd seen a porpoise recently. I took the liberty of reporting it to the Seawatch Foundation, http://www.seawatchfoundation.org.uk/ you may have already done so. Do you know if anyone from south of the Ribble took part in the recent National whale and Dolphin Watch? I have a friend in Crosby who has seen porpoises out on Burbo Bank - keep scanning that sea.

best wishes

Dave McGrath
