Ron Jackson e-mailed me with these pics from a cannon
netting session out on the Ribble, presumably with the South West Lancs
Ringing Group.
It must be 20 years since I went cannon netting out there, and last time
all I managed to achieve was ending up waist deep in a muddy gully at
11.30pm on a cold November night.
Ah, happy memories – still it is probably the most fun you can have with
explosives legally…bring on the bazookas!
Oh yeah. And you didn’t have to wear a disguise when I did it either…..

Two wildfowlers saw "a small scruffy heron with a downturned bill" out
on Hesketh Marsh recently. Sounds as if the Glossy may have been lurking
on the Ribble.
The attached is of our cannon net attempt (19/3) at Banks, we got 31
Shelducks but none of the target Wigeons.
"The point is though that when the cannons fired, a helluva crack, the
whole marsh erupted, and up came 18 Whoopers that had been completely
unseen, presumably lying low in one of the gutters out on the marsh.
"So if big birds like them can hide then so must smaller stuff like a
Glossy or who knows what.
"Interesting also to note that we counted 7102 BHG nests by flogging
around on Banks out marsh this spring but you'd have a job to see
anything from the sea wall even with a scope."
