Managed a quick count of the Tufted Ducks on Sands Lake, Ainsdale, this afternoon - bitterly cold and grey, but there were 159 of the critters at least on the water, which I think is the highest count I've had here.

Single drake Wigeon, Little Grebe and a female Goldeneye in with them, plus the usual Mallards and Black Headed Gulls, Moorhen, Coot etc.

Robin, Wren and Dunnock singing.
A group of seven Magpies were scoffing sea buckthorn berries, as was a rather funky Brown Rat, high in the branches and shovelling as many of the orange berries down its gob as it could.
Magpies drunk on the fermenting fruits I can handle, but when the rats start getting smashed down here, it's time to go home.
Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies.....

And before I forget...here is a good document posted on the Dee Estuary site - if you've ever been to the Hebs, you'll want to get involved in this...
