Good birdin' from Mount Baker....

Posted by on January 4, 2007 11:22 AM |

Fresh from his blitz of Sri Lanka (53 lifers and Leopard) Barry McCarthy just texted me (11.20am) from the top of Marshside's Mount Baker, where he had Velvet Scoter and three Little Gulls over the Ribble.

Good records, although given high winds and good tides, conditions are ripe for some decent birds seeking shelter offshore at Marshside.
This is only Marshside's second record of Velvet Scoter - the first was in 1978, and also found by Bazzo.
Tides look good for the weekend too.
Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies.....

I must start by wishing everyone a happy and good birding New Year.
What great pleasure I've had reading everyone's comments, I'm so glad I found this website.
Special thanks to John.
Now to the good stuff.
Visited a local place for me called Pennington Flash,Leigh,nr Wigan.
It really is a great place to visit beautiful lakes ,park for children,9 hole golf course and most importantly 5 covered and enclosed bird hides.
You can probably see up to 40 different species in a day.I counted 10 grey heron all standing within a 20ft circle.
10 pair of goosanders, teal, wigeon, gadwals, little and great crested grebe, 2 pair of reed bunting , 3 snipe nearly 2 when a merlin swooped in and scattered them, half dozen cormorants, pintail , smew.
Don't forget some food for the ducks and canada geese but mind your fingers, and your children, they are very greedy.

Stop Press ! Dec 5th ! At Mere sands This afternoon. There is a HAWFINCH in a private garden less than 10 mins from there! Spoke to the owner of the garden to find out where ,he declined to give out his address and name etc ! Pity as an amazing record will be lost ! Wibble Wobble JELLYHEAD

God's Holy Trousers!!!!
Amazing record, worth keeping an eye on any stray cherry stones in that neck of the woods then.
Ta Jelly!!!!

Had my first visit to Marshside 5/01/06 weather was perfect.Im pretty new to this game but well and truly hooked after today. The birds were fantastic managed to see the peregrine, stonechat, curlew, snipe, golden plover, lapwing, kestrel, jackdaw, the usual ducks and a first for me the black tailed wits.
