Eschewing the joys of a good high tide, Tropical went ringing yesterday (it's probably the earliest he's got up since I had to boot him out of bed for the Murrelet last year).
Anyway, here's how he got on....
"Hi John,
The first ringing session at Birkdale was fairly successful today.
Once the sun made an appearance, which was worth getting up for on its own, birds soon started to hit the nets at a steady rate.
5 Robins, Dunnock, Goldfinch, Goldcrest, Wren, various amounts of Great Tit, Blue Tit and Long Tailed Tit plus 2 male and 1 female Blackcap (Sylvia Atricapilla) was the morning haul.
I know people have differing views on ringing birds, but if you love your birds and want to get up close and personal, and even fondle the little lovelies then ringing could be for YOU.
Plus its another list to work on, and we all love lists don't we?
Also seen this am 1 Jay and 3 Jack Snipe, there are up to 5 Jack Snipe at a regular spot in the reserve.
Have had up to 3 different Blackcaps in the garden this week, feeding on apples and fat balls, so eyes to the bird table, eyes to the bird table.

The idea of you getting your jollies from fondling passerines may leave me feeling slightly sullied, unclean, and not a little nervous...., but there's no denying the good info stuff we get back from ringing.
