Apropos of nothing.....

Watched a Buzzard being mobbed by Rooks at Buckley HIll Lane, Litherland, on the way home from work this afternoon, so suitably encouraged, I went for a quick walk around the Sands Lake - surely with a light south easterly earlier in the day, at least one Chiffchaff would have made the effort to move north....?????
All I was asking for was a little "hoo-et" to start the weekend.
Big mistake - all was quiet around the lake, apart from singing Blue Tit, Robin, Dunnock etc
The Mute Swan was sitting and a Coot was looking confused while standing on top of the mess of reedstems that pass for its nest.
About 30 odd Tufties, one Common Gull with the Black Headed Gulls on the water, plenty of the latter in full summer plumage now.

Things can only get better.
Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies....

John,

Had circa 105 Whoopers flighting over Churchtown Moss yesterday at about 3 pm. Seemed to be gaining height and heading NNW, crossing Churchtown by the St Cuthberts and Brockhouse spires. VV noisy, even joyously so,much more than when simply roost/feeding flighting into MMWT. Could they be off north? Seems a strange time of day but presumably they do migrate at night. The habitues of "Sandgrounders" ought to have seen them if they weren't still gabbing! I had a go at videoing "carolinensis" yesterday but packed up (a) because little point in videoing something sound asleep and (b) I don't like queues!
19 Twites still at Banks, most colour ringed by Dave Sowter. One of the Banks ringed juv Lesser Black Backs had its ring read in Spain this winter.

Two Kittiwakes, plus the usual suspects in a seawatch off Formby Point today.
