After a fairly uneventful spring in terms of passerine migration at Marshside, (just as we were all about to impale ourselves on our tripods in despair) Clarko came up trumps this morning, when he discovered this adult female Woodchat Shrike at the corner of Marshside Road at about 7am.
Mobiles beeping all over Southport roused us from our lazy Sunday morning slumber.
Never have Marshside's finest looked so bleary-eyed as we fell out of cars and set up the 'scopes to watch the little darling - a real beauty!
Nice one Graham...hurrah!

By the way, if anyone is thinking of going for the bird - stay on the road or footpath, do NOT try to get closer to the bird by going onto the marsh.
Although it disappears for a few minutes at a time, doing a circuit of the ditches after bees and other insects, it does perch up in the bushes alongside Marshside Road, and shows very well - so you can see it fine, especially looking north from the layby just before the junction.
Plenty of Wheatears out on Marshside Two as well, so with lots of birders coming down to pay Shrike homage, you never know, something else might be found too...and there's always the Avocets to watch.
Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies....
