Start 'em young....

Young%20Birder%20Ollie.jpg

Not bad, only four years old, and ticking off Woodchat Shrike - Ron Johns and Lee Evans ought to be very afraid....
Well done for connecting with the Woodchat to Ollie Maddocks, Neill's next door neighbour - can't be easy sorting out transport, id and negotiating the crowds when you're pre-school age.
Neill's explanation, and Woodchat shots follow.....

Yo
few more shots for blog. Took Ollie, my next door neighbour to see Shrike, he was well made up. He was defo the youngest birder there, he's only 4. I've taken him down the marsh several times now and he loves lookin at the birds.
(he could well be one of our next generation of Marshside Birders, start em young I say.)

As for Ollie being the youngest birder there - I did see a very pregnant lady 'scoping the shrike early this morning - I wonder can you count it if you see it before you're born?
Best check with the Vatican Birding Society - I'll get back to you on that one.
Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies....

No sign of shrike at 5 20 this morning but as I was only watcher (or person) there maybe I was in the wrong place (on bank near school with some shrikey looking starling laden bushes on inland side of bank)
Should have gone yesterday pm but knackered after my WeBS stint from H Bank boatyard along seawall to new RSPB reserve boundary and back.
V quiet unless you like counting Shelduck. 9 Dunlin, a coupla Eiders and a female M Harrier.
Two Curlew Sands and a L Stint on fresh pool near Old Hollow this a.m.
Makes you think, Hoopoe and Woodchat within 48 hours and half a mile of each other. Any other mediterranean delights in store?

I don't have details other than that the guy's kosher as far as something like a hoopoe is concerned.
I'll find out in due course,
Ron

Re the Hoopoe, it was Gerry Williams, one of the Ribble WeBSters.
As for other Med exotica I fancy a raptor, even a RFFalcon would do,

There are those who will be curious to know if this Hoopoe was on the Merseyside side of the pumping station, or West Lancs ...
