The audacity of it!
NO root ginger and NO fresh coriander when I went to do the weekly shop at Formby, reluctantly joining the rest of the slack-jawed trolleypushers from sector 7G.
Big deal, I hear you say, but the store's woeful shortcomings meant I had to cut across the mosses to the monster supermarket at Kew in the hope of scoring said ginger and coriander.
Luckily my bins and scope were in the car, so I managed a bit of birding on the way, and it wasn't bad....
10 Buzzards in the air over the southern Withins, where a Peregrine mobbed two of 'em for a while, and spooked large numbers of Woodpigeons, gulls and a few finches into the bargain.
Two Buzzards over Altcar Moss, and a Raven, its big black wings shining in the afternoon sun, just to the north of Lydiate Station.
And five Buzzards over Plex Moss, where there were good numbers of Swallows feeding over the fields, a Sparrowhawk, Kestrel, single Wheatear and a Yellowhammer.
I never did get the root ginger, but if all shopping trips were half as good as this one, life wouldn't be so bad.
Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies...
