Pretty raw out on the mosses this afternoon and fairly quiet too.
Went looking for geese and found a few small flocks, mainly of 120+ birds, but all just Pinkies.
No really big groups to get stuck into unfortunately.
Birds out on the Withins, Plex and Carr Mosses.
A flock of 130 odd Whooper Swans on Plex was a pleasant surprise, presumably the same herd Derek Forshaw saw on the goose count last week.
They were a good distance away, nearer Carr Moss really, and had their heads down feeding most of the time.
Given the range I couldn't pick out any definite Bewick's amongst them, but I did wonder why they weren't going for the easy feeding option at Martin Mere?
Nice to see them grazing on the mosses again though.
Smaller numbers of Fieldfares and Redwings about out there now, with Stonechat and several flocks of Linnet and Skylark to distract the attention.
Common Buzzards spooked the Starling packs, with birds over Woodvale, Plex and Carr Moss.
This particularly lazy lump eyed the Linnets perching on wires a few feet from it, but only bothered to drop to the ground after prey once in the 45 minutes I watched it.
Met Ken Horton, who'd had Short Eared Owl on the Withins and near Broad Lane, Formby, last week - must keep a look out for them on the mosses now.
Another day without a Barn Owl - has the population been really hammered by the wet summer I wonder?
Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies...
