Took in the Withins, Formby Moss , Plex Moss and Carr Moss this afternoon - and it wasn't half bad, despite the sharp wind.
One or two groups of Fieldfares and Mistle Thrushes on the fields.
A Kingfisher was on one of the ditches on the Withins - the first I've seen there as far as I can remember, and the Red Legged Partridges were scooting about as usual.
Two Rooks were in with a small groups of Carrion Crows and a party of four Common Buzzards were circling about, having a whale of a time, swooping, wheeling, mewing, hovering....
I know they're pretty well resident now, but it was good to watch them all the same.

Formby Moss and Plex were relatively quiet - no Whoopers or Pinkies out there today, and the reason was glaringly obvious: a big shooting party, Barbours, flat caps and green wellies, 4x4s etc were blatting away - a very bad day to be a Pheasant or Pinkie...
Further away from the gunfire one flock of Skylarks held 70+ birds, and three Corn Buntings were on the wires near Haskayne Cutting.
A group of 17 Mistle Thrushes and 8 Fieldfares fed nearby, jittery as usual.

Heading home with the light fading across Carr Moss I came across about 1,000 grazing Pink Feet, and not far from Ainsdale a Buzzard with a damaged wing, unable to fly and struggling to hop across one of the stubble fields.
I couldn't get out to it unfortunately.
I trust the high numbers of shooters about and the discovery of a winged Buzzard were purely coincidental.
Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies...

Recently we have had a regular visitor to our garden which looks like a Parakeet.
It perches in an apple tree and eats the apples. It is green and yellow in colour with black beak and is about the size of a pigeon but with a longer tail.
We wonder if it is an escaped cage bird or a migrant from warmer climes .
I am trying to get a photo of it but it is difficult to get near enough.
If there is any interest please respond to me through this email address. ganddkirkwod@talktalk.net
