Bitterly cold out on the beach at Ainsdale today - leaden, dark, heavy clouds were like a cumulative New Year's hangover and even the usually sprightly Sanderlings looked miserable as they scooted about.
A few Grey Plover, Turnstone, Dunlin and Redshank, with a loose flock of Shelduck.
The southern end of Taggs Island and the Green Beach held four Common Snipe, Skylark, Reed Bunting, Meadow Pipits, 5 Red Legged Partridge and a Stonechat.
The Little Egret rose from the reeds ahead of me and drifted off north into the gloom.
What I wouldn't give for some blue sky.
The Linnet flock was still feeding around the tideline, and the Sands Lake was busy with birds - 114 Tufted Ducks, 17 Shoveler, 4 Pochard and the scruffy drake Pintail, which was dozing under the branches on the island.

There were probably better places to be today.
Like indoors.
Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies...

Hi John a belated happy new year to you and your family.
just a quick visit to Marshside today Mrs G in tow and she dragged me around the shops.
Walked from RSPB car park to shops and back.
A force 5 hooley was raging and many birds keeping low but managed a few Green and Goldfinches,2 Stonechat,1Little Egret,15 Redshank up towards pier with a few Shelduck.
The water level was high in front of Nels and birds showing were very distant Black Tailed Godwits, Curlew and all the usual ducks.
Roll on May for warm sunny days again.
Mrs G pointed out the two very dirty swans on the Marine Lake ha ha.
