New Year, more stunning photos from Rich Steel - this time achieving the near impossible by making the grumpy white chicken at Neston look good!
Wish it'd take a trip up to Marshside...I missed the one a few years ago and so need it for my marsh list.

Rich explains: "Been a good start to 2008. Finally managed to get in close on some Fieldfare. Also a Med Gull and Purple Sand at New Brighton and that White Cattle thing at Neston!!"

Cracking shots Rich, thanks.
The link to his website is on the right.
Meanwhile another force 10 raging hooley is forecast to roar in later today - Marine Lakes at Crosby and Southport, Sands Lake etc all worth checking during or after the storm, or if you can hack it, who knows what maybe blown past offshore?
Wintering Pom Skua anyone?
Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies...

Looked like a flock of 30 odd Corn Buntings sitting on overhead wires on the other side of Formby Bypass to Ladygreen Nursery at Ince Blundell as I headed home this afternoon.
True enough, I was going at mach 12, but they looked bulky and upright enough to be Corn Bunts - can't remember when I last saw them in this area before...

That same flock of Corn Bunt gave me the same surprise as I drove past yesterday.
Prediction of Pom Skua was accurate - see http://www.crosbybirding.blogspot.com

Anyone lost a Harris Hawk and a Common Buzzard?
Watched both flying together (with jesses on) between Daresbury Labs and Preston Brook, Warrington today, near canal.
The Harris Hawk was tame, even landing briefly on my arm!

The Harris Hawk has been a regular around the Daresbury / Moore area for at least 2 years.
Not heard of it landing on an arm before though, that must have been an interesting experience!
There's a few reports of it on the Moore NR website, here's the earliest one back in Feb 2006! http://www.wrg.co.uk/moorenaturereserve/sighting.asp?ID=415

Today (9.1.08) I was doing one of my frequent walks along the Loop Line (Well Lane to M62 -SJ48E) when I spied a large flock of small birds 200m away across the playing fields on Gateacre Park Drive.
They were too far away for me to identify them, so as soon as I could I shot round to Gateacre Park Drive to get a closer look.
As luck would have it they were still there and I was able to close in on them and get a positive ID.
51 linnets is a somewhat unusual sighting for this part of the world, at least in my experience, but one of you might just tell me otherwise!
