Scratching the New Year's Day itch

Gloomy and grey, I still put my faith in Marshside this morning for the first foray of the new year.
It was however, fairly quiet.
Two Little Egrets on the outer marsh and two on the inner, a Merlin or two and small skeins of Pink Feet.
Still large numbers of Curlew on the outer marsh.
That was probably as good as it got - met Steve Riley, who'd had the Green Winged Teal early on out on Marshside One, but it had melted into the throng of Pintail, Wigeon and Shoveler by the time I checked the area.
A few hundred Lapwings, with a handful of Golden Plover, about 500 Black Tailed Godwits and Reed Buntings and Gringos tootling around the Forest of Bale.
Steve had counted 20 Yellowhammer on Station Lane, Plex Moss earlier in the day - a very good count these days.
33 Pochard on the Sandplant lagoon, with the usual Little Grebes etc, but then family/pub duties called.
Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies...and a happy new year to all.

Called at Sands Lake this afternoon, finding, to my surprise, an adult Yellow-legged Gull with the Blackheads. Also two Water Rails squealing and 93 Tufteds.
The southern Green Beach produced a Jack Snipe.

...and have you seen that Woodpigeons now officially outnumber feral pigeons as a breeding species in many city locations.
Fortunately the woodies, invading parks and gardens, are likely to be more tolerated than their McDonalds and chip eating, building fouling, cousins.

Hello, John. Happy New Year from Morocco!
I am writing to tell you that some English birdwatchers saw your write-up in the paper and contacted Ali for some Houbara sightings.
They were lucky and saw 4.
If they send me a pic, I'll put it on Ali's website.
