Got down to North Moss Lane today for an hour or two with the superb male Red Backed Shrike.
A gorgeous bird, it spent its time catching more bees than was good for it and singing from the fenceline along the public footpath north towards Broad Lane.
Thanks to Ian H for putting it on the blog - don't know who found it, but if it was you Ian, very well done - Red Backed Shrike is a very scarce bird in Lancs with not many records.
Not surprisingly the bird drew a good crowd and some fine socialising was had by all.
Fair few folk were heading off to or coming from the Red Rumped Swallow at Leasowe, which was showing very well apparently.
Cuckoo calling away, as was the Quail that Ian mentioned, and plenty of Whitethroats with Common Buzzard up above.
The Whitethroats were pushing their luck harassing the shrike frequently, but it seems happy crunching bees rather than sylvia warblers.
Neill and Bazzo were down, and they'd had the Glossy Ibis showing very well in front of Nels Hide at Marshside this morning, and a Cuckoo by the Sandplant, while they were helping with the big tidy up.
May try the mosses again later...or say hello to Mr Peroni.

Hi John, after we left you with the shrike we got the Red Rumped Swallow showing well plus Spotted Fly and then went to Gilroy and got the Wood Sandpiper.
Added to Glossy Ibis, Cuckoo and Little Egret a fantastic day.
