Thanks to Tropical Thomason for sending us the latest news and pix from his patch - Birkdale NR, I really must have a look down there next time I get a chance, I haven't visited since summer dragonflying....
Over to Trops....

Hi John,
After finding small feeding partys of Crossbills 2 weeks ago in Birkdale N R, I thought I'd try and relocate them for photo purposes, imagine my surprise when a group of 4, 2m + 2f fell into my lap 'like a pint of cold Theakstons on a Friday nite' .

These birds were feeding and drinking from small puddles at the start of the main path within a 9 iron of Royal Birkdale C.H.
I got a few snaps before those b...... dog walkers spooked them, also in the reserve that day 1 Buzzard ( there have been up to 5 around since Sept), 4 Jays, few Fieldfare and Redwings, lower numbers that usual, also conspicuous by their absence are Blackcaps and Jack Snipe.

Hopefully this cold snap will move birds about a bit.
Cheers,
Tropical.

Nice one, thanks for the update and pix Trops - I feel a meeting to discuss that cold pint is imminent...
Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies...

I will most definitely be trying to seek them out over the next few days, it'd be nice if they came to one of the feeding stations (highly unlikely though) I'm attempting to establish down there, only red thing thus far is a Red Squirrel gobbling the food!

On the subject of Blackcaps, I checked a regular site on the front (northern) edge of Royal Birkdale last weekend where normally in winter they are very reliable but I didn't get any.

Hi John
I'm just watching a Grey Wag on the roof of the Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool.

Hi Chris F, are yours the over-sized fat balls (not being personal here) I found on a birch tree just off the main path in Birkdale? I also have started a small feeding station down the path next to the 15th fairway of R.B., it's on the right near where the water drains into the large slack (known locally as Thomason Delta), it was a regular site for Bullies and Blackcaps last year.

Hi Paul,
Yep they're mine, they'd gone today but the peanut sack was still there and I chucked some seed down.
Plenty of tits, Robin and a Jay which used the peanuts for a bit. The Jay came back and a Coal Tit went mental, I've never seen one so cross, I think it actually scared the Jay off! I know where you mean, think I saw it last winter, will get over that way and have a look tomorrow or next weekend.
I had 3 Blackcaps today, all males feeding on Buckthorn on the southern side of Death Hill (probably meaningless to all except Tropical!) next to the Birch wood. A few Bullfinch over the other side at the back of the ringing area too.
Plus a Peregrine speeding south fairly high out over the coastal dunes.
