More book signings and a wee bit of birding...

Posted by on March 20, 2009 3:49 PM |

coverwm.jpgRight, just a quick heads up to anyone who hasn't got "Wild Merseyside" yet (and why the hell not??) that I'm doing some more book signings tomorrow (Sat) at Pritchards in Formby and Crosby.
I'm at Pritchards on Brows Lane, Formby, from 10.30-11.30am; then at Pritchards on Moor Lane in Crosby from noon to 1pm.
The book is also now on sale at the Sandgrounders Hide at Marshside RSPB - just ask whoever is the volunteer on duty, and they'll get a copy for you, at the downright giveaway price of £4.99.

Got down to the marsh just before lunchtime today, ostensibly to deliver copies of "Wild Merseyside", but a quick butchers revealed singing Chiffchaff and Goldcrests, plus two Blackbirds around the Sandplant Compound; 60+ Avocet around the Sandplant Lagoon, plenty of Little Egrets on Marshside One, Dunlin, Ruff, Goldies etc.
Steady passage of Mipits and alba wags, with Pinkies n Merlin on the outer marsh.
Thanks to Dave McGrath who sent that huge web address about dog disturbance - you can link to it here
There's gotta be a Garganey out there somewhere.
Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies...

Got the Ring Necked Duck at Seaforth early afternoon, Chiffchaff in SSSI ditch at Marshside, and Little Owl on Churchtown Moss, Wyke Moss Farm.

Two Little Gulls over Rimmer's Marsh now (17.55)

Belted Beauty moth (male) at Meols today with Ruby Tiger caterpillars and Common Lizards basking in the sunshine nearby. 2 Comma butterflies flying around at Ness Gardens yesterday.

I had a large raptor high over my garden in Marshside this afternoon, it seemed to have jessies on and it seemed russet below with a white band at the trailing edge of it's tail & a white rump. Any ideas?

For anyone in or around Downholland, it might be worth keeping your eyes on the fields: I saw something resembling a Short-toed Lark (unstreaked breast)
off Owen's Lane this afternoon.
The view was bad, so I'm not sure it's worth giving precise details, but maybe (just maybe) it's one of those that pays dividends once every fifty heads-ups.

Was the mystery raptor a Harris Hawk?

100+ Whimbrel + RL and Grey Partridge in fields opposite Gorsey woods, Little Crosby this afternoon

There was a little bunch of 4-5 Wheatears hopping around the molehills at the back of Marshside 1, near the high school, yesterday afternoon

I've looked up photos on t'internet & concluded that it was indeed a Harris Hawk. It was ranging far & wide & high, I hope it remembered to come back!
Cheers
Les

At least 4 Wheatears around Weld Road car park this afternoon, also a pair of Grey Partridge in fields by Heathy Lane bridge again.

Hi John bought your book on Sunday and it was a good read.
Not much at Marshside that day apart from Avocets, Blackwits and a Little Egret.
