Steve and Jim: The REAL story

Many thanks for the prompt response from Richard du Feu and Jeroen Reneerkens who have supplied me with full details of the colour-ringed Sanderlings, Steve and Jim, who were on Ainsdale beach a few days ago.
Turns out Jim is actually called Ido, although he can be forgiven for this duplicity by making it from the top of Greenland to Ainsdale beach in a little over three weeks.
Very cool.
Jeroen explains: "G5GYWR has been ringed on a nest in Northeast Greenland by us recently! The bird is called "Ido" after the son of Koos Dijksterhuis, who caught this bird with me.
"The pair (we also caught the female) was quite succesful until the day that the chicks hatched. On that day the weather deteriorated (snow and very strong wind) for several days. We are not 100% certain, but we believe that the chicks, that had already left the nest, did not survive this inclement weather."
Anyway, here comes the science bit...

Fascinating stuff.
Away from the blinged-up clockwork waders, a Swift heading south early this afternoon over Marshside, with many hirundines on the move too, and a fine Peregrine coming in off the estuary at the top of Southport Marine Lake at 8.10pm.
Over 100 Sandwich Terns fishing offshore at Ainsdale tonight, stark white against an angry purple sky at 8.35pm.
Mothing last night at Dempsey Towers brought dustbins full of Large Yellow Underwing, a nice Goldspot and two Poplar Hawkmoths.
Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies...

Swift over Plex Moss Lane and a lovely female Redstart hunting from a fence post just off the track on the third bend this afternoon

59 Sand Martins moving south on a storm front last night at about 8.15 - 9pm - this was a garden tick por moi and mucho appreciated as I sipped my brew....with a celebratory cigar!
Big tide tomorrow should be a mammal fest at local salt marshes, but not as good as today's porpoise record in the mucky brown water at Pickerings Pasture, at least 7 individuals feeding in the tide.
Also got Golden Plover back in dribs and drabs - ones and twos going through at the moment so things are starting to shift around at last!
