Crows showing off - by Rich

I am a sucker for crows, always have been, always will be.
I'll happily attempt to talk to Ravens (try it - a few "bok boks" and a "cronk" and they'll usually come and have a chat) on the Outer Hebs 'til they cart me away, which won't be too long now apparently (I know Matron, I know, it's medication time).
So I was delighted when Rich Steel sent me his latest batch of shots - part of a project by the great man on capturing corvids in flight.
All gorgeous pix of these characters (link as ever on the right to Rich's website).
Thanx Rich.

"Hi John, I have been working on a mini project of corvids in flight", Rich explains.
"This has mainly been directed at Rooks as I think they are very underrated and beautiful birds when the sun hits them.
Still working on the Jays and only the attached 'missile' shot so far ...lol"

I must admit, I lurve the "jaydart shot", and wholeheartedly agree about Rooks - top birds, and great to see them moving back into the area north of the Mersey over the last few years.
There were five sitting around the playing field and roadside fence by Holy Family High School in Thornton as I drove down to Crosby during rush hour today...Vive Le Rook!
(didja see what I did there Adam?)

Excellent picture of the Jay. Often see Rooks in Kirkdale cemetery, Longmoor Lane Fazakerley, I'm sure they've nested there by the bus stops.

Re. the Rooks at Kirkdale cemetery, there are half a dozen nests in a big Black Poplar adjacent to the main road, thankfully it was spared last year (presumably because of the nests) when all the poplars on either side were brutally butchered (pollarded). There's a colony of Jackdaws around there too. Walking along Lord Street, Southport at dusk this evening it was nice to see a pile of Pied Wagtails dropping out of the sky into a leafy Horse Chestnut alongside the Scarisbrick Hotel with an overspill going to roost in a (still leafy) Alder on the opposite side of the road.

That's right Maurice I watched daily as the tree surgeons butchered the trees, I was waiting to see if they would touch the trees that the Rooks where in but fortunately they didn't. I also have seen the Jackdaws nearby .

Impressive.
That black and white shot is my favourite. I will see how I can match these myself...I think our Blue Magpie would make a perfect subject, if I can look down on it. This is easier said than done, in the rainforests.
