Thanks to Rich Steel (link to his site on the right) for these superbly atmospheric shots of corvids looking mighty sinister.
"They look almost Hitchcockian in black and white," says Rich.
Indeed they do.

Bit quiet round Dempsey Towers way at the moment, although the recent snow/hail/frost nonsense (I'm bored with winter now) brought Fieldfare and Redwing back into the garden, as well as two Reed Buntings and a female Pheasant - which was odd.
Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies...

I was in Edinburgh at the weekend.

A birder friend of my sister, when hearing that I had missed the black necked grebe last week, told me of one at Longniddry, a few miles along the coast.

So off I popped on Saturday. Almost immediately I saw the grebe in question. A first for me!

Not only that but also in the scope, amongst a load of common scoter were 50 or so velvet scoters. Another new bird for me!

And what were all those white ducks? 60+ Long tailed ducks. Yet another new bird.

What a day. Actually what 15 minutes! I headed back towards town, stopping off at Musselburgh to see even more velvet scoters, eider ducks and...

several Slavonian grebes!! And if it had not been for a local birder dismissing them offhandedly as 'just a few slavs' I would have missed them.

It was a very good day. OK I missed the Firecrest which was around but you can't have everything.

The 2 Tundra Bean Geese were showing really well on Plex today, roughly half way along Plex Moss Lane, around 2pm, with about 300 Pinkfeet.
