Good to see it's not just me that gets his jollies from Snow Buntings on Ainsdale beach.
As if I didn't need reminding of the winter snows, Lee Harrison (link to his site one the right), has kindly sent me some shots of the Snow Bunts on Ainsdale at the start of the year.
Are they still around? I've not been on the beach for a few days now (ahem).
"When the Snow Bunting first arrived this year along with the snow, I took the opportunity to try and see them to get my first tick of the year, stood there watching them, both birds fed along the tide line, they came to within a metre of metre and then just continued on past me", says Lee.
"After watching them for 45min and watching their behaviour, I decided to walk down past them and lay down against the tide line next to a piece of drift wood and stayed perfectly still - sure enough they came feeding along and came within 2/3 of me, at their closest I took no pictures - not to spook them, but seeing them so close truly was an amazing experience and one I'll never forget."

Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies...

Hey John, thanks for using the pics. I hope everyone likes them.
Thank always,
Lee Harrison.
Hi John,
Marshside today. Peacock Butterfly, Red-tailed Bumblebee, and 7 and 11-spot Ladybirds.
Mike.
Great pictures of the Snow Buntings. I remember a few years ago there was a small group at the far end of New Brighton on the sea wall that were very approachable.
Up at Formby on Tuesday, a single Redpoll was seen. Also today, a couple of bees were released from the kitchen blinds. Is this a sign of better weather to come?
Single snow bunting feeding on the high tide line on Ainsdale beach this afternoon, quite unfazed by walkers, dogs and cars.
At least 3 adult summer plumage Med Gulls viewed from Nell's Hide, Marshside, late afternoon.
Those photos are superb. All of you keep up the good work. JD's blog is one of the highlights of my day.
Stopped off for the Snow Bunting on the way to see the Bean Geese yesterday, but decided there were too many folk about !!! Shows how wrong you can be!!
Bean Geese showing well though, once you got your eye in!!
I reiterate Dave's comment, JD "highlight of the day". Keep it up!!
Am new to the net but "grew up" on the fields and marsh pre-Coast Road (learned to swim in Polly's).
Great to see so many new birds. Would have died for an avocet or an egret.
Ibis and bw stilt next to arrive on a regular basis?
Very aggressive male Reed Bunting on my garden bird table this morning. The species was a regular winter visitor to this garden before a Wimpey housing estate was built on the adjacent Cheshire Lines Walton railway triangle (with its "Seven Sisters" reedy ponds/ lakes) in the late 70s.
