Envisaged another Gannet release programme on Sands Lake when I came across this tired critter on Ainsdale beach today.
Unlike last year's bird, this Gannet could fly - and did when approached, so the Coots were denied another encounter with Mr Dagger Bill - a shame as the bird seemed to be particularly moody - it wouldn't even play with a tennis ball before heading out into the bay again.

Hope it recuperated, doubt it will, once they come onto the beach, it's usually game over.
Coast busy with people today, so not so good for birds, although there were big numbers of Ringed Plover on the Green Beach, and some of the Dunlin and Grey Plover up there are now in superb full summer plumage.
Anyone seen anything else today???
Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies...

Heard my first grasshopper warbler at around 9pm tonight in the little warbler hotspot behind The Nags Head pub in Thornton. Seeing it in the flesh was another matter altogether though ! Whitethroat, willow and sedge warbler about too.
Sandgrounders hide at RSPB Marshside will be closed on Tuesday 18th May & Wednesday 19th May due to damage caused during a break in.
Nels hide, other viewing areas and footpaths on the reserve will be open as normal.
Apologies for the disruption.
