It's one thing to sit all demure on top of a hawthorn bush in the autumn sun, but this male Kestrel was fooling no one - especially as minutes earlier it had grabbed a vole, returned to the hawthorn and ripped it to shreds - who's the cute one now?

It polished the vole off lickety split, but was a welcome diversion on an otherwise quiet afternoon in the dunes at Birkdale - more dogwalkers than birds unfortunately.
Still a few Redpoll about though, with parties of titmice, two Goldcrest, a single Chiffy calling, Jay, Redwing, Siskin and Chaffinch moving through the site.
Comma butterfly basking in a bramble clump, and several Common Darter on the wing, but none to rival Phil Smith's corking Black Darter in the dunes yesterday - thanks for the pic Phil...

Quick look at the Withins and Plex Moss yesterday was also largely fruitless - two supercool Ravens and more Red Legged Partridge than you could shake a shotgun at, plus Skylarks and mucho geeses.
Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies...
