Thanks to Ralph Jones for sending me this shot of the Pied Billed Grebe that went public at Hollingsworth Lake in Greater Manchester this pm, almost a week into its sojourn.
"Popped over to Hollingsworth Lake to have a look at the Pied-billed Grebe this afternoon", says Ralph.
"Very nice bird, posed at the edge of the lake for a while, then did some fishing.
Attached a photo, though a bit distant".
In the old fashioned days, used to be the case that Pied Billeds hung around for at least 100 years - it'll be interesting to see how long this Yankee sticks.
Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies...

Cracking Bird, I'd love to go and see it but no car anymore :(...
If its been there for a week why has the news only just been released???
Lee Harrison
Great shot of this rare bird.
It was picked up by one of the local birders last week who, from a distance assumed it to be a Little Grebe which is rare enough in itself for Hollingworth. Some visitors from RSPB Mansfield noticed it on Sunday and one managed to get a photograph which eventually helped ID the bird on the 9th.
I normally wouldn't go scooting about looking at rare visitors - unless they are local - but I had a free afternoon today and my wife wanted an outing.
So off we popped and there it was, resting at first and then swimming about fishing for its supper.
Nothing special to look at but nice to see all the same.
Pied Billed Grebe still present on Friday afternoon, showing well at times
Churchtown Moss had 150 Chaffinch and 50 Goldfinch yesterday 2 Brambling also a few Greenfinch and Tree Sparrow

The lake is 10 mins walk from Smithy Bridge railway station ...
Went up there yesterday, 22nd Nov, and spent a freezing afternoon hoping to get a glimpse. But no luck. First time it's not shown for over a fortnight. Just my luck. Anyone know whether it's still around.....?
