Many thanks to Rich Steel for this set of Waxwing shots - it was inevitable he'd take his crisp lensmanship to 'em sooner or later with so many around this winter.
Just one of those birds - never looks anything but sexy sexy sexy...
With a pack of the critters in Formby (see Mike Aindow's comment on previous entry), you could bump into 'em anywhere in this cold snap.
In these brutal temperatures, could this finally be the time we get a few flocks in Sefton rather than transients?
What an Xmas prezzie that'd be.

Gorgeous shots Rich - thanks again.
Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies...

Several oil stained birds around crosby marina and beach today including a Ringed Plover and a Mute Swan which was particularly well oiled
4 Blackcap, Song Thrush, up to 9 Blackbird, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Goldcrest and best of all, a Brambling in my garden in Birkdale today.
The fields around Ince Blundell woods had 17 Grey Partridge today also Stock Dove, G.s.woodpecker, Buzzard, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel and best of all a m. Bullfinch.
Happy Christmas to you John, reading your blog has been a daily highlight for me and many more readers
Stunning close views of a Barn Owl hunting in the snow this morning on Churchtown Moss. It was totally unconcerned at my presence and fully focused on locating rodents beneath the snow. I watched it for half an hour quartering the field edges until it managed to get a mouse/vole 15ft from were I was standing. Also had a Little Owl at dusk near Ince Blundell
1 Blackcap (male) 2 Blackbirds and a Song Thrush in my garden this afternoon in Halewood
Noting Duncan Rothwell's comment, I saw a Goldcrest in the garden today, also in Birkdale - the first one since the first cold snap in November. Great to see the little gem has survived the harsh weather. It appeared to take something from beneath the bird table and disappear.
The hard weather has driven a good selection of birds into Thomason Towers over the festive weekend. Apart from the usual visitors to the bird table we have tempted Blackcaps 2 females, Song Thrushes, Jays, a Wren and a male Reed Bunting, a first for our garden. As I'm writing this Mrs T shouts "bird alert" and shows me a fine male Blackcap picked up through her new 8 x 30 Jenoptems Santa brought her for Christmas. Mince pies to the skies.
Red Kite spotted midday on Sat 8th jan.
flying just off Knowsley Expressway.
To my left as I approached the end of the express way at Halewood.
No it wasn't a Common Buzzard.
Red Kite being mobbed by crows and gulls flew over my house in West Derby on Sat 8th Jan approx 2pm. Heading towards M62, Old Swan area.
Not blogged before but had to post when I read this. I'm way over the estuary in the north of Blackpool and there were 2 Waxwings in the garden last weekend. First time I've ever seen them so grabbed my camera!!
The cold weather has also brought in a Fieldfare and a Redwing, very rare for around here, especially as I live in a suburban area.
