Austin's Gropper

Thanks to Austin Thomas for this shot of Gropper - a beauty.
"I hope all is well with you", says Austin.
"Time to keep your ears open for the Grasshopper Warblers. They are back on the streets giving it large...
Here is one that you might like to share, taken locally this morning".

Indeed Austin, they are stonking little birds -and with two males reeling in the dunes south of Shore Rd at Ainsdale and birds doing the same in BIrkdale NR as usual, it's a good time to look for the critters before the vegetation gets too rank.
Assuming all the dunes aren't burnt to a crisp by the dregs of the gene pool that is.
Although skulky, Groppers tend to sing from exposed perches early morning - so set your alarm clocks and get reelin'.
Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies...

Two Wheatear out near Bickerstaffe Moss yesterday.
Excellent photography, Austin, cheers.

Male Whinchat on Plex Moss this afternoon on the fence posts in first cow field

Another big fire in the dunes on Friday evening in Birkdale frontals in Sand Lizard territory.
Don't know how it started, but rescued a few Natterjacks while trying to beat it out.

Hi John,
Had 7 reeling Grasshopper Warblers this morning at the back of The Punchbowl Inn, in the scrubby fields around Jubilee Wood. You could hear two of them from the carpark. Also plenty of Sedge Warblers, a Wheatear and a Cuckoo.

I found a freshly dead, squashed female Lime Hawk-moth in Crosby Baths car park today. I've kept the 6 eggs which were exuding from her body, I'll rear the larvae if they hatch. Meanwhile Holly Blues, Speckled Woods and Orange Tips have all been laying eggs around my garden over the weekend but I have yet to see a Comma butterfly this Spring!
