Ain't nothing as seedy looking as a wet, oily Starling, and this one didn't disappoint as I spent a few hours down at Marshside this afternoon.
Rank vegetation, and still July quiet, although there are plenty of Blackwits about, with the roost off Nels also holding five Dunlin, three Ruff and a Knot.
While all this rain is great for Natterjacks, it means the water levels are way too high at the marsh to draw in a tasty wader - there's just not enough muddy edges.
If something mega comes, it better have long legs.
Few Dunlin and Redshank with the Blackwits at Polly's, and a scattering of Snipe and growing numbers of Little Egrets.
Young Sprawk flapped through low, showing a bizarre amount of rufous feathering in the wings - some type of moult issue I expect.
I suppose I should have pooped up to Banks to see the Spoonbill, but I bet it would have been asleep.
Sandplant compound had a few Mipits and Linnets and not a lot else.
Faced with an afternoon of studying eclipse Wigeon, Shoveler, Teal and Gadwall, I cut my losses and ran.
Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies...
