Crabs for lunch!

Posted by on January 6, 2014 6:37 PM |

Thanks to John Fisher for these latest excellent pics of the Great Northern Diver taken on the Marine Lake yesterday.
"Got a few shots of the GND this rather grey morning," John explained.
"It appears to have a liking for crabs".

Interesting - I was wondering how much food it was finding on the lake as we watched on Saturday.
Seems crustaceans are firmly on the menu!

Eyes to the skies everyone, eyes to the skies...

Back Lane, Thornton two nights ago at dusk I was watching a Barn Owl hunting when it flushed a Woodcock giving an excellent view sillhouetted against the darkening sky.

Contemplating a visit to see the GND at the Marine Lake this weekend - does anyone know if it's still around?

I can't remember seeing the fresh marshes at Marshside/Crossens (especially Crossens Inner) so packed with ducks and waders as this morning!
My guess is that the recent gales and tidal surges have swept the saltmarshes clear of seeds and other food, so the birds are resorting to the fresh marshes, which were not affected.
Total 72 Ruffs across the 3 marshes, Long-tailed Duck still on Junction Pool, Rock Pipit flushed from tide-wrack along Crossens Embankment, Great Spotted Woodpecker drumming on Hesketh Golf Course.
Peregrine and Buzzard over the saltmarsh.

Hi John; tried to send a longer message but it failed I think. Found a body of a GND on Aindale beach 14/1 about 3/4 mile up from Pontins going towards Formby Point area. Possibly the one from Marine Lake?
JD: Oh no! Sad find Bob (didn't get earlier message).
